My dad became increasingly controlling and manipulative, using his words to break me down instead of his hands. He would say things that cut deeper than any physical pain, leaving me feeling small and worthless.

And yet, he would still give me gifts and shower me with compliments in public, further confusing and confounding my already fragile teenage mind. And then there was that t-shirt. My dad had a habit of buying me gifts as a way to apologize for his behavior. He would justify the abuse by saying, “but look at all the things I buy for you.” One day, he surprised me with a t-shirt that read “I Have A Dad.” I remember trying to smile and say thank you, but all I could feel was anger and resentment.
