By the time he reached high school, it was clear that McGinnis had a natural gift for basketball, and he quickly became one of the top players in the state. After a stellar high school career, McGinnis was recruited by many top colleges, but he ultimately chose to stay close to home and attend Indiana University. During his three years with the Hoosiers, he solidified himself as one of the best players in the country, averaging a remarkable 19.6 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. In 1973, McGinnis entered the NBA draft and was selected by the Philadelphia 76ers with the fifth overall pick. From the moment he stepped onto the court in a Sixers uniform, he made his presence known. The 6’9″ power forward was a force to be reckoned with, using his size, strength, and athleticism to dominate opponents. Alongside fellow superstar Julius Erving, McGinnis helped lead the Sixers to their first playoff appearance in six years, bringing excitement and hope back to the city.

During the 1975-76 season, McGinnis had arguably his best year in the NBA, averaging 23.1

points, 12.9 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game. His incredible performance not only earned him a spot on the All-Star team but also helped the Sixers reach the NBA Finals for the first time since 1970. Although they ultimately fell short to the Portland Trail Blazers, McGinnis’ impact on the team was undeniable. Over the next two seasons, McGinnis continued to be a key contributor for the Sixers, but injuries and team dynamics led to a decline in his statistics. In 1978, he was traded to the Denver Nuggets, bringing an end to his time with the Sixers. However, his legacy in Philadelphia remained intact, and he will always hold a special place in the hearts of Sixers fans.
